What You Need to Know About Loose Gums

Swollen, red, and loose gums are a sure sign that a person has developed gum disease, also called periodontal disease. This occurs when built-up plaque infiltrates the gums and begins to eat away at the surrounding structures. Periodontal disease is most often caused by poor oral hygiene, but several other factors could lead to gum disease, including:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Smoking
  • Stress
  • Certain medications
  • Some systemic diseases
  • Aging
  • Genetics

Gum disease slowly progresses into an aggressive disease that leads to tooth loss. If you’re experiencing any symptoms of gum disease, such as loose gums, contact your dentist as soon as possible.

Continue reading to learn about the progression of periodontal disease and how it’s treated.

Stages of Gum Disease

In many cases, patients don’t realize they have gum disease until severe symptoms arise. This is because the early signs of gum disease are often insignificant. However, sometimes the symptoms can’t be ignored.

The first stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. During this stage, the bad bacteria in the mouth has just overtaken the good bacteria. Dental plaque hardens and forms into dental calculus (or tartar). This grows between the tooth and tooth socket which may lead to these symptoms:

  • Excessive bad breath
  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Tender gums

Loose gums become more apparent during the second stage of gum disease, called periodontitis. At this point, bacteria invade the tooth root. The body responds by sending immune cells to the mouth, but these only act as fuel to the bad bacteria. In addition to loose gums, some patients also experience gum recession, loose teeth, and dissolving bone structure.

If a patient doesn’t seek dental treatment, gum disease progresses into advanced periodontitis which typically results in tooth loss. Patients may also experience pus between the gums and teeth and sores in the mouth.

Treatment of Loose Gums and Gum Disease

At Austin Laser Dentist, Dr. Ragsdale uses a combination of traditional, effective treatment and the latest technology. If you’ve been diagnosed with gum disease, she may suggest one or more of these periodontal disease treatments:

  • Laser Gum Surgery
  • Root Planing and Scaling
  • Laser Pocket Decontamination
  • Gum Grafts
  • Gum Tissue Regeneration
  • Bone Grafting

These treatments don’t just stop the progression of gum disease, they undo the damage, like receding or loose gums, the bacteria have caused. Sadly, periodontal disease is never completely gone. These treatments will keep it stabilized and maintained, and as long as the patient continues to practice good oral hygiene and visits the dentist regularly, the disease will likely be kept at bay.

Gum Disease Prevention

Preventing gum disease is extremely important because it can lead to so many oral and overall health problems. Periodontal disease has been linked to heart disease, respiratory disease, diabetes, and premature birth. To avoid tooth and gum loss and these other health issues, follow these prevention guidelines

  1. Maintain a good oral hygiene routine:  This consists of brushing properly twice a day, flossing daily, and using an essential oil antibacterial mouthwash.
  2. Eat properly: A healthy diet is essential to maintaining good oral health. This includes leafy greens, dairy products, lean proteins, nuts, and lots of water.
  3. Avoid tobacco products: Cigarettes and chewing tobacco are a detriment to oral health. Smoking increases tartar build-up and increases the risk of periodontal pockets. Tobacco also breaks down the connective fibers in the mouth.
  4. Visit the dentist regularly: While you are the first line of defense against gum disease, regular dental cleanings are essential to preventing and stopping the progression. A dentist will be able to spot any invisible symptoms of gum disease, so you never have to experience the damaging effects.
